Almost 300,000 drone owners registered with FAA in first month
Following the institution of the new drone registration rule from the Federal Aviation Administration, nearly 300,000 individuals have registered small unmanned aircrafts since Dec. 21.

“The registration numbers we’re seeing so far are very encouraging,” FAA Administrator Michael Huerta said in a statement. “We’re working hard to build on this early momentum and ensure everyone understands the registration requirement.”

With the large increase in popularity of drones over the last few years, the FAA instituted a registration process for unmanned aircraft that weigh between 0.55 and 55 pounds. Before owners can legally fly their drones outside, they need to be registered through the FAA.

Applications only cost $5, and people who registered within 30 days of Dec. 21 were able to register for free. Drones that were purchased before registration started need to be registered by Feb. 19, and registration lasts for three years.

You can register online here.

According to the website, if your drone is heavier than 55 pounds, used for commercial or non-hobby/recreation purposes, or you plan on flying it outside of the U.S., you have to register by paper. The FAA is working on making that registration process available online by March 21, it says in its statement.

The registration process is in-part an education process for drone owners, helping new flyers learn about the necessary safety that goes along with aviation.
